NHS Office Building | Phoenix, Arizona

Neighborhood Housing Services purchased a “historic” commercial property located in the downtown core of Phoenix along McDowell Road to develop their new headquarters within a neighborhood that the Nonprofit serves. The aging structure needed complete rehabilitation to produce adequate environments for offices, meeting and conference rooms and the all important Community Classroom. Rehabilitation work included structural repairs to bowstring trusses in the east portion of the building, with the west portion framed with conventional roof trusses that were structurally adequate.

The design utilized all available volume within the hybrid structure, in order to create spacious interiors. A large skylight was added above the stair to the storage loft, creating daylighting for the rear of the building where window openings were prohibited due to security issues. Angular circulation paths allowed for energetic connections between the front and rear office zones, terminating in a circulation node outside the kitchen that precedes entry to the Classroom.
